Peru’s president to be recognized with the organization’s highest honor for his accomplishments in office

New York, September 17, 2014—On Thursday, September 25, Americas Society will present President Ollanta Humala with the Gold Insigne, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments as president of Peru. This event will be webcast live.

Americas Society’s Gold Insigne is awarded to democratically elected heads of state from the Western Hemisphere whose exceptional leadership has had a deep and long lasting impact in their country and the lives of its people. The Gold Insigne honors distinguished leaders who excel at promoting greater social, political, and cultural awareness of the realities of both their countries and the region.

"Under President Humala’s leadership, Peru has emerged as one of the strongest, most stable, and competitive economies in Latin America. His determination and commitment to create a society where economic growth and social inclusion will march together, is an example for the hemisphere as well as the developing and developed world," says Americas Society/Council of the Americas President and CEO Susan Segal. "We are truly honored to present him with the Gold Insigne."

Sound macroeconomic policies and the introduction of important structural reforms have dramatically improved the competitiveness of the Peruvian economy. President Humala's policies ensure sustained growth, while important government priorities in education, health, and security continue to be addressed.

In recent years recipients of the Gold Insigne have included Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Ricardo Lagos, Michelle Bachelet, Felipe Calderón, and Juan Manuel Santos.
