Video: IMF's Alejandro Werner on Latin America's 2017 Economic Outlook

Speakers:

  • Alejandro Werner, Director, Western Hemisphere Department, International Monetary Fund
  • Vivianne Rodrigues, Latin America Managing Editor, Economic and Political coverage, Bloomberg (moderator)

The International Monetary Fund expects Latin America's GDP to grow 1.2 percent in 2017, said the IMF's Alejandro Werner, who spoke with Vivianne Rodrigues of Bloomberg about different countries' specific hurdles and anticipated turning points in the year ahead. Werner discussed Mexico's currency in light of the political uncertainty with the new U.S. administration, economic adjustments that Colombia's made to reboot recovery, and why it's important for the Argentine government to strengthen its data collection on inflation and GDP numbers. For him, Brazil's current administration is not addressing medium- and long-term growth, but the liquidity shock the country faces due to ongoing corruption investigations will result in more efficient industries in the future.
