Mexico 2017 Video: A Conversation on the Future of NAFTA

Panelists discussed what lies ahead for NAFTA, including prospects for the modernization of the agreement.

Panelists:

  • Moisés R. Kalach, Director of the Strategic Council of International Negotiations, Consejo Coordinador Empresarial
  • Patrick Ottensmeyer, President and CEO, Kansas City Southern
  • Brian Winter, Editor-in-Chief, Americas Quarterly; Vice President of Policy, Americas Society/Council of the Americas (moderator)

"Lets do no harm to what we have accomplished," said Moisés Kalach from the Consejo Coordinador Empresarial in Mexico at the 2017 Latin American Cities Conference in Mexico City, where panelists discussed the prospects for modernizing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Patrick Ottensmeyer explained that renegotiating a trade deal goes beyond trade rules and includes a wide range of industries and interests operating in both countries. Ottensmeyer explained that negotiations should focus on bigger ideals of North American competitiveness: "Not only trade, but social relationships among the three countries," he said. Ottensmeyer also said there needs to be education about how important NAFTA is for people to engage in the discussion.
