The conference coincided with International Women’s Day 2017 and marked the AS/COA Women’s Hemispheric Network’s fifth year convening inspiring leaders from the United States and Latin America to tell their personal stories and talk about how young women can reach their full leadership potential. The event in Santiago featured influential entrepreneurs, government leaders, rising talent from the region, and business leaders from multinational companies committed to women’s economic empowerment and mentoring young professionals.

Michelle Bachelet

President of Chile

Michelle Bachelet is the president of Chile. Previously, she was undersecretary general and executive director of UN Women. Prior to this position, she served as the first female president of the Republic of Chile from 2006 to 2010. A member of the Socialist Party, Bachelet formerly served as the minister of health from March 2000 to January 2002, and as the minister of defense from January 2002 to October 2004.

Scarlett Alvarez is vice president and chief stakeholder and sustainability officer for AES. She joined AES in 2002 and has served in diverse roles at the local, regional, and corporate levels in the areas of stakeholder management, external and investor relations, corporate social responsibility, and corporate affairs. Alvarez is also a member of the Board of Directors of several AES companies in Brazil, Dominican Republic, and Panama. Prior to joining AES, she worked for the telecommunication company of Venezuela, a subsidiary of Verizon.

Karen Bruck is Mercadolibre’s regional sales corp director. Before this role, she led Mercadolibre’s team in Uruguay as country manager for more than 3 years. Bruck lived in the United States for 10 years where she graduated from MIT Sloan School of Management in Cambridge, MA and also worked in strategic consulting at Bain & Company and at Home Depot as their online strategy manager. She studied Business Administration at ORT University in Montevideo. Bruck currently lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina with her husband and two daughters.

Mónica Contreras has been the president of PepsiCo Foods for the Andean Region since 2013. Her professional career at PepsiCo started in the year 2000; she was general manager of Colombia (2011-2013); responsible for the Colombia operation (2009-2011); and in the first years she had several roles in the areas of marketing, sales, and trade marketing—she was the first woman to reach a leadership position in sales in Latin America.

Coordinator of Inclusion and Gender Equity Unit, CAF

Violeta Domínguez is head of inclusion and gender equality at CAF - Development Bank of Latin America. Prior to this position, she worked as a consultant on gender projects for different organizations and was the director of the Spanish International Cooperation Agency in Angola, Mozambique, and Uruguay. Domínguez also worked for eight years at the United Nations Development Program, where she focused on gender development programs.

Mónica Duwe is the CEO of HSBC Bank Chile with more than 25 years of experience in financing and investment banking. She has worked in Luxemburg, Germany, New York, and Chile. Duwe has held positions at Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein as director responsible for Commodities Structured Finance for the Southern Cone, head of Syndicated Loans Latin America, and head of Debt Origination Southern Cone. In Chile, she was representative and country manager of BNP Paribas for 8 years before joining the HSBC Group in 2011 as the head of Global Banking.

Senior Vice President & Head of International Government Relations, MetLife

Susan Greenwell is senior vice president and head of international government relations at MetLife, a global provider of life insurance, annuities, employee benefits, and asset management. In her role, she serves as an advisor to the company’s global business leaders and supports MetLife’s position in all relevant political, regulatory, and legislative arenas in nearly fifty countries in Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North Africa. Greenwell is also responsible for overseeing MetLife’s relationships with international trade and industry associations.

General Counsel, Walmart Chile

Carmen Román is the corporate manager of Legal Affairs at Walmart Chile. Since joining Walmart in 2009, she has been responsible for the development and implementation of the Ethics and Compliance Program and since 2015, she has been part of the executive committee at SOFOFA, a Chilean business association. Previously, she worked at the Santa Isabel, a Chilean supermarket chain which at the time was owned by Dutch multinational company Ahold. In 2004, after the acquisition of Santa Isabel by Cencosud, she was named the holding’s head of Legal Affairs.

U.S. Ambassador to Chile

Carol Z. Perez, a career member of the Foreign Service, class of minister-counselor, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate July 14, 2016 as U.S. ambassador to Chile. She served as principal deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Human Resources at the Department of State, from 2015 to 2016. Ambassador Perez also served in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs as principal deputy assistant secretary from 2013 to 2015 and as deputy assistant secretary from 2011 to 2013. Journalist

Consuelo Saavedra is a senior correspondent and presenter at Televisión Nacional de Chile and Radio Duna. She has hosted TV newscasts, political shows, and investigative reporting programs for more than 20 years. Among many recognitions, Saavedra was named Chile’s best TV Journalist in 2012 by Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez. She is a board member of Comunidad Mujer and Enseña Chile. Saavedra is a proud mother of three and as many working women considers herself a “professional juggler” struggling to achieve work and family balance, if such a state really exists.

President and CEO, Americas Society/Council of the Americas

Susan Segal was elected president and CEO of the Americas Society and Council of the Americas in August 2003 after working in the private sector with Latin America and other emerging markets for over 30 years. A passionate supporter of Latin America, she joined the organizations to implement a new strategic plan to renew and return the Society and Council to their historic position. Prior to her current position, she was a founding partner of her own investment and advisory group focused primarily on Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic sector.
