Dr. Ysla Campbell, from the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez, will deliver the inaugural address in this launch of the XVII Conference of the Asociación Internacional de Teatro Español y Novohispano de los Siglos de Oro (AITENSO). Campbell’s address is titled "La monetarización de la vida cotidiana en la obra dramática de Juan Ruiz de Alarcón." The theme of this year’s conference is “Hispanic Classical Theater and its Cultures: From the Early Modern Period to the Twenty-first Century.” The launch, in Spanish, will take place at the Americas Society; the conference, which will also be conducted in Spanish, will be held at Queens College October 20-23.

AITENSO, translated in English as the International Association of Spanish and Latin American Golden Age Theatre, is an academic organization that brings together researchers from all over the world with the aim of promoting and disseminating rigorous scholarly studies about Spanish and Latin American theater, primarily from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Ysla Campbell, who was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, received her doctorate in Spanish American literature from the Colegio de México. She is founding president of the Asociación Internacional de Teatro Español y Novohispano at the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez (UACJ) and served in that capacity for eight years, in addition to coordinating the Compañía de Teatro Clásico de la UACJ for productions of works by Lope de Vega, Ruiz de Alarcón, and Calderón de la Barca. She has published numerous books amd essays on Guillermo Prieto, Francisco Portes, María Grazia Profeti, Tirso de Molina, and others. Campbell is director of the Obras dramáticas completas de Juan Ruiz de Alarcón. She organizes the biannual Coloquio Internacional Juan Ruiz de Alarcón at the UACJ. She has published numerous articles in international journals on Golden Age theater, the Picaresque novel, and Chihuahuan literature.
