Overview

Council of the Americas will hold a meeting with Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment, and Fisheries Iván Ontaneda to discuss the status of Ecuador’s investment climate, key issues on the 2021 trade and investment agenda, and how Ecuador can best take advantage of the rebounding global economy.

Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno has made trade integration and attracting foreign investment in the region key elements of his government’s economic agenda. Ecuador and the United States signed the Protocol on Trade Rules and Transparency in December 2020. More broadly, Ecuador has negotiated and updated free trade agreements with Chile and Mexico toward joining the Pacific Alliance, completed agreements elsewhere in the Americas, and recently complemented its agreement with the EU through new agreements with the European Free Trade Area and the UK.

As Ecuador heads into the presidential runoff on April 11 with a new administration scheduled to take office May 24, the coronavirus pandemic appears to be waning and attention is turning to economic recovery.

The conversation will be in Spanish, and translation will be available.
