Overview

Cuba Then by Ramiro A. Fernández, with a forward and poems by Richard Blanco, celebrates more than a century of Cuba’s intensely colorful history with 250 never-before-published photos. From the earliest daguerreotypes to glamorous shots of movie stars, the country’s history is represented by a rich spectrum of personalities: race-car driving aristocrats, showgirls, gangsters, everyday people, and revolutionaries who would soon transform the nation, including Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara. A dynamic collage of images, experiences, and memories, Cuba Then presents the glamour and the grit of the island’s tumultuous history through a collection that passionately preserves traces of a lost homeland.

Speakers:

  • Ramiro A. Fernández, Contributing Photo Editor, Americas Quarterly
  • Christopher Sabatini, Senior Director of Policy, Americas Society/Council of the Americas; Editor-in-Chief, Americas Quarterly (Interviewer)
