São Paulo 2015 Blog: Opening Remarks by Amcham's Gabriel Rico and Susan Segal

By

The CEOs of Amcham Brasil and AS/COA highlighted Brazil's complex economic agenda and President Dilma Rousseff's upcoming visit to Washington.

Speakers:

  • Gabriel Rico, CEO, Amcham Brasil
  • Susan Segal, President & CEO, Americas Society/Council of the Americas

Amcham Brasil CEO Gabriel Rico opened the morning in São Paulo by talking about the necessity of the complex but "absolutely necessary" economic adjustments the country is making. He noted also that President Dilma Rousseff’s upcoming visit to Washington on June 30 will be an opportunity for Brazil to become more integrated into the global economy.

AS/COA's Susan Segal followed, highlighting the importance of social media and the internet in today's world, of which Brazil is a prime example: an estimated 71 percent of Brazilians are online every waking hour, and the country is the world’s fifth-largest cell phone market with more cell phones than people—despite the fact that 35 percent of the population does not have access to mobiles.
