Lorenzo Zambrano: 1944-2014

AS/COA is saddened to learn of the passing of Cemex CEO Lorenzo Zambrano, who served as a member of Americas Society's Chairman's International Advisory Council.

Americas Society and Council of the Americas are saddened by the death of Cemex CEO Lorenzo Zambrano. A member of our Chairman's International Advisory Council for more than a decade, he was honored in 2005 at our annual Spring Party with the Americas Society Gold Medal for his outstanding global leadership and remarkable achievements in the private sector.

"It is with deep regret that we have learned of the passing of the exceptional business leader Lorenzo Zambrano," said AS/COA President and CEO Susan Segal. "Americas Society and Council of the Americas wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends in their time of loss."

Zambrano took the helm of chief executive officer of Cemex in 1985 and is credited with making the Monterrey-based company Mexico's first multinational firm and a true global brand. He went on to take on the role of chairman of the company, originally founded by his grandfather, in 1995. Under his watch, Cemex became the world's top distributor of cement in 2007.

"Mexico has lost an extraordinary businessman and a great Mexican," said Mexico's Finance Secretary Luis Videgaray following news of Zambrano's passing on May 12 at the age of 70 during a trip to Spain.
