Ecuadorians will vote for president on August 20 in an unprecedented snap election.

Ecuador is holding general elections a year and a half earlier than planned. Following President Guillermo Lasso’s May 17 decision to invoke the muerte cruzada, a constitutional mechanism to dissolve the legislature and call for early elections, voters will head to the polls on August 20 to elect a new president and all 137 members of the National Assembly. If no presidential candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, or a combination of 40% of the vote plus a 10-point lead over the second-place finisher, a runoff will be held on October 15.
