COA Welcomes U.S. Department of Commerce's "Look South" Initiative

Council of the Americas welcomes today’s announcement on the U.S. Department of Commerce initiative to help more U.S. companies increase trade in Latin America.

Washington, D.C. January 9, 2014—Council of the Americas welcomes today’s announcement by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker about the new “Look South” initiative designed to help more U.S. companies increase trade in Latin America. Specifically, the Department of Commerce-led effort promotes exports to the 11 Latin American economies with which the United States has free trade agreements.

Council of the Americas congratulates the Department of Commerce’s efforts to increase awareness about the economic vitality and opportunities in our hemisphere. Encouraging free trade has long been a priority of the Council of the Americas and this initiative is a step toward strengthening economic ties in the region. A timely initiative, “Look South” will pave the way for companies to boost their exports to Central and South America. These efforts will help support U.S. firms as they expand trade with Latin American partners that are projected to have solid GDP growth and a stronger middle class in the upcoming years.
