Brazil Might Not Be As Bad As Brazilians Think

Brazil continues to lead in LGBT rights and financial inclusion, trailing only the United States, according to the Americas Quarterly Social Inclusion Index 2014.

Some good news on Brazil for a change.

Even though the country slipped in a recent social inclusion index, now trailing arch-rival Argentina, Brazil has a lot to be proud about.

Brazil ranks eighth in the Americas Society/Council on the Americas (ASCOA) annual social inclusion index, down from fifth place last year. But the only truly racially and socio-economically diverse country ahead of it is the United States. Uruguay remains No. 1, but is a small, homogeneous society....

Brazil continues to be a regional leader on LGBT rights, ranking first—along with Uruguay and Argentina—and also leads in financial inclusion, trailing only the United States.

Brazil’s biggest social shortfalls remain in the area of women’s rights, primarily between low income black and white Brazilians, and in ranking officials in government.  The Brazilian congress is nearly all men, and most state governors are men....
