Audio: COA's Farnsworth on VOA's Encounter

COA's Eric Farnsworth discusses the possible impact of the protests in Brazil on the country's 2014 presidential elections on Voice of America's Enounter.

On July 5, COA's Eric Farnsworth discusses the short- and long-term implications of the demonstrations in Brazil on Voice of America's Encounter. Farnsworth mentions that because of the protests, Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, was "knocked off her stride politically." But with the elections more than a year away, he questions whether the opposition can produce a viable candidate. "Sometimes you can win an election just because you're the best alternative of everybody out there, and it's unclear at this point if there will be another person who...can capture the momentum and the energy of the protests and not be seen as an insider or somebody who has made their career as a politician," Farnsworth notes.
