Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan Joins Americas Society's Board of Directors

Americas Society is proud to announce that Arturo Sarukhan, who until recently served as Mexico's ambassador to the U.S., has been elected to the Board of Directors of Americas Society.

New York, February 5, 2013- Americas Society is proud to announce that Arturo Sarukhan, who until recently served as Mexico's Ambassador to the U.S., has been elected to the Board of Directors of Americas Society. A distinguished career diplomat and academic who has played a key role in U.S.-Mexico Relations for over two decades, Arturo Sarukhan adds his diplomatic acumen and deep knowledge of the region to an already rich group of board members with wide-ranging experience and expertise.

“Ambassador Sarukhan is an outstanding professional and one of the most respected experts on U.S.-Mexico relations. We are very pleased and excited to welcome him to Americas Society’s Board of Directors, which will benefit from his extensive experience and insight,” said Americas Society and Council of the Americas President and CEO Susan Segal.

“I am honored to join the Board and to support David Rockefeller's vision for the groundbreaking role the Americas Society has played in deepening ties across the hemisphere,” said Ambassador Arturo Sarukhan.

Arturo Sarukhan served as a career diplomat in the Mexican Foreign Service for 20 years. He received the rank of Career Ambassador in 2006.

He held numerous positions in Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Deputy Assistant Secretary for Inter-American Affairs and Permanent Representative to the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1993 Ambassador Sarukhan was posted to the Embassy of Mexico in the United States at the outset of negotiations with the U.S. Congress over the North American Free Trade Agreement, serving as Chief of Staff. Ambassador Sarukhan was also head of the Counternarcotics Office at the Embassy, Chief of Policy Planning at the Foreign Ministry, and Consul General of Mexico in New York City. In 2007, he was appointed Ambassador of Mexico to the United States, where he served for six years.

The Ambassador studied History at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and has a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations from El Colegio de Mexico. He earned a Master’s Degree in American Foreign Policy at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, where he was a Fulbright Scholar and Ford Foundation Fellow. He has been decorated by the governments of Spain and Sweden, and received several awards in recognition of his diplomatic achievements. In 2010, Ambassador Sarukhan was included in the List of Global Leaders of Monocle magazine, and, for five years in a row, has been in The List of 300 Most Influential Mexican Leaders by Líderes Mexicanos magazine.
