Workshop: Becoming a Confident Investor

AS/COA's Women's Hemispheric Network and Young Professionals of the Americas hosted experts from Goldman Sachs who gave insights into the world of investing.

Speakers:

  • Oussama Fatri, Vice President, Consumer and Wealth Management, Goldman Sachs
  • Sarah Higgins, Vice President, Consumer and Wealth Management, Goldman Sachs

In a Women's Hemispheric Network and Young Professionals of the Americas members-only workshop, Goldman Sachs' Oussama Fatri and Sarah Higgins laid out the principles of investing and the management of personal finances in an interactive discussion with AS/COA and YPA members alike. Higgins started off the session by giving an overview of the market, noting that global GDP is set to expand by 6 percent in 2021. This suggests a solid recovery, especially in the United States. She also noted that increased Covid vaccinations may accelerate the full return of a service sector with high return rates. The big question of the group, however, was why investing is worth it. "Investing allows you to do two main things: protect the purchasing power of your money and grow your asset base," Oussama Fatri explained.

Higgins also spoke about the relationship between investment risk overtime, saying that as an investor, the older you get, the smaller the risk you should have in your portfolio. Although there is no shortage of outlets or ways to stay on top of the markets, Higgins said that experience is the best way to learn: “Nothing teaches you how the markets work than actually putting in a little money…You pay more attention when it's your money at stake.”

The financial experts also spoke out the role of different asset classes in a portfolio, equities, hedge funds, and private equity.
