CNN: Brian Winter on What's Next in Brazil's Impeachment Process

Thursday, May 12, 2016

On May 12, Brazil's Senate voted in favor of a trial to impeach Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, giving the seat, for the time being, to Vice President Michel Temer. AS/COA Vice President of Policy Brian Winter talked to CNN about the next items on both Temer's and Rousseff's agendas.

Reining in Brazil's huge budget deficit should be Temer's first undertaking, though it may not bode well with citizens. "He is not going to have long to convince Brazilians to go along with him for what will be some pretty bitter medicine in order to fix the economy," said Winter.

On Rousseff's end, the suspended president will likely try to marshal international support ahead of her trial, said Winter, while preparing the groundwork for her party to return to power in the 2018 elections.
