Audio: Will Chavismo Outlive Hugo Chávez?

On Voice of America’s Encounter, AS/COA’s Eric Farnsworth discussed President Hugo Chávez’s legacy and the repercussions of his death in Venezuela and globally.

On Voice of America’s Encounter, AS/COA’s Eric Farnsworth described Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez’s legacy as one “willing to put the resources of the state behind a social movement [by] tapping into a deep vein of romanticism.” Farnsworth analyzed the future of chavismo as interim leader Nicolás Maduro will likely face opposition leader Henrique Capriles during the upcoming elections. “[Chavismo] can survive, but it has a lot of bumps on the road ahead of it...The person who replaces him is going to find a very difficult economy and a very polarized, divided society," said Farnsworth. "So what you have now is a country that’s going to increasingly rely on the myth of chavismo for it to actually continue."
