President of BNY Mellon Karen Peetz spoke with AS/COA Online about increasing women’s board representation and the challenges facing women in top roles in business and finance. “We don’t have as many women in senior positions that people can look up to and aspire to,” she says.

In celebration of Review’s new issue focusing on iconic and emerging writers in Latin America, Americas Society held a three-evening symposium of literary discussions, panels, and bilingual readings of original work by iconic and young writers from throughout the region. For the third night of the symposium, Americas Society hosted the launch of Review 86. The event featured comments by Daniel Shapiro (editor), and Carmen Boullosa (guest editor). There were also readings by Gioconda Belli (Nicaragua) and Luis Rafael Sánchez (Puerto Rico). Work by all these participants is showcased in Review 86.

Representatives of the private sector and educational institutions discussed the importance of human resource development, student exchanges, and labor reform for improving the competitiveness of Latin America’s labor forces and economies. Panelists talked about the current technological needs of employers and investors, gaps in education and training, mentorship programs in the workplace, the role of student exchange programs and the private sector, and Brazil’s recent Science Beyond Borders program.

En un panel organizado por AS/COA, Jason Marczak junto a otros expertos analiza los avances del proyecto bipartidista de inmigración en Estados Unidos y asegura que el largo proceso de enmiendas podría impedir la aprobación de una reforma.

En CNN, Christopher Sabatini analiza la importancia de Latinoamérica en la agenda exterior estadounidense a propósito del discurso reciente del vicepresidente Joe Biden, en el que manifiesta un renovado interés de la administración en la región. Para Sabatini, las visitas de funcionarios del gobierno de Barack Obama a América Latina apuntan a forjar una nueva relación comercial, lo cual a su juicio es relevante, dada la atención que Estados Unidos da a otras regiones y a otros países como Corea del Norte e Irán.

Durante la 43 Conferencia Anual de COA sobre las Américas, oficiales de la administración Obama destacaron la necesidad de crear una alianza unificada con sus empresarios para potenciar el intercambio comercial y el crecimiento en el hemisferio. Ante la asamblea en Washington, el Vicepresidente Joe Biden también hizo un llamado al gobierno venezolano a plantear un "diálogo genuino con la oposición y reconocer sus voces". La Conferencia de COA, que es realizada anualmente, reúne al sector gubernamental estadounidense con el sector privado para discutir temas puntuales relevantes para la región. Este año la Conferencia se enfocó en fortalecer la unión comercial entre Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica luego de la gira del Presidente Barack Obama a México y Costa Rica a comienzos de mayo.
