Ildefonso Guajardo

Secretary of Economy, Mexico

Ildefonso Guajardo has been Mexico’s Secretary of Economy since 2012. He has previously held the posts of chief of the Executive Office of the Governorship of Nuevo León; technical secretary of Planning, Communication, and liaison with the Secretariat of Commerce and Industrial Development; chief administrative officer of the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs from 1994 to 1997; and undersecretary of tourism development in the Secretariat of Tourism. Guajardo has been a federal congressman in two instances for the Revolutionary Institutional Party (PRI). He received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, a master’s in economics from Arizona State University where he was a visiting professor; and a PhD in public finance and economics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Ildefonso Guajardo ha sido Secretario de Economía de México desde 2012. Previamente, fungió como jefe de la Oficina Ejecutiva de la Gubernatura del Estado de Nuevo León y jefe de la Unidad de Planeación, Comunicación y Enlace en la Secretaría de Comercio y Fomento Industrial. De 1994 a 1997 se desempeñó como oficial mayor de la Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores para más tarde ocupar la subsecretaría de Desarrollo Turístico en la Secretaría de Turismo. Guajardo fue diputado federal por el Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) en la LVIII y LXI legislaturas. Estudió la licenciatura en economía en la Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, tiene una maestría en economía en la Universidad Estatal de Arizona, donde ha sido profesor, y estudió el doctorado en finanzas públicas y economía en la Universidad de Pennsylvania.
