A Timeline of Nicaragua's Crisis

As a national dialogue tries to negotiate Nicaragua’s democratization, we chart the incidents since the uprising began on April 18.

Updated August 2, 2018—More than three months and 350 deaths later, Nicaragua is still in turmoil after a series of clashes between government forces and protestors demanding President Daniel Ortega’s resignation. “Nobody saw this coming,” journalist John Otis told Americas Quarterly in a recent podcast episode, but Ortega’s slow decomposition of the country’s democratic institutions has led demonstrations to evolve from protests against social security reforms to demands for early elections on March 29, 2019, two and a half years ahead of schedule.
