Overview

Council of the Americas will host a briefing on the latest political developments unfolding in Venezuela.

As economic and humanitarian conditions in the country continue to worsen, the leadership of President Nicolás Maduro has confronted new political pressures. The designation of U.S. financial sanctions on Venezuela’s senior government officials, recent meetings in Washington between the Trump administration and the country’s opposition, and proposals to suspend Venezuela’s participation in hemispheric institutions have all intensified calls for reform.

Benigno Alarcón Deza, director of political studies at Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, and Roberto Picón, a coordinator for the opposition coalition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), will offer their analysis on where these and other developments are leading Venezuela.
