Overview

Join us for the screening of Two Americans, a gripping documentary by Daniel DeVivo and Valeria Fernandez that follows the story of two Americans at the center of Arizona's immigration battle—Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and a 9-year-old girl whose parents were arrested in one of Sheriff’s Joe’s immigration raids.

Granted full access by the Arizona sheriff, the filmmakers examine justice from his perspective as well as from that of a little girl, Katherine Figueroa, who was separated from her parents when they were arrested during a raid at a local car wash. The film documents the sheriff’s tactics as well as Katherine's pleas to President Barack Obama, following her to Washington, DC where she testified before an ad-hoc committee hearing and pleaded for the president's help in Arizona.

A post-screening discussion with the filmmaker will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the film as well as insight on the sheriff's policies and a federal judge’s May 2013 decision that Arpaio’s office had racially profiled Latinos in its patrols, forcing the sheriff to temporarily suspend all his immigration efforts.

DeVivo is an award-winning freelance producer from New York City and Fernandez is an award-winning freelance journalist.
