Lunch: U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Roberta Jacobson on the Western Hemisphere-Asia Relationship
Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere Roberta Jacobson will discuss goals and plans of relations between Asia, Latin America, and the United States.
Overview
Whether in trade, diplomacy, or in politics, Latin American and the Caribbean is assuming an increasingly global role, and so has the United States’ policy with the hemisphere. While the United States is still the top trade partner and source of foreign direct investment for the Western Hemisphere, a booming middle class and expanding commercial profile in Latin America has meant that Pacific Rim countries have become important partners for the hemisphere. Through the Pacific Alliance—a new economic bloc of forward-looking countries that includes Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru—and the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)—a twenty-first-century trade agreement that includes Canada, Chile, Mexico, Peru, and countries along the Pacific Rim—the United States and hemispheric partners are forging deeper, formal relations with partners in Asia.
Join us for a public luncheon with Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere Roberta Jacobson to discuss goals and plans of these emerging relations between Asia, Latin America, and the United States, and how these plans will affect free trade, economic growth, prosperity, and the political and diplomatic futures of both regions.
