Overview

The recent outbreak of the Ebola virus has raised concerns about a wider spread of the disease and the capacity of governments to address it. In order to prepare, countries in the Americas are implementing travel bans, constructing quarantine stations, investing in biosafety equipment, training health professionals, and reevaluating infectious disease protocols. Is this the most effective and appropriate approach in order to prevent a spread of the disease into the Americas? Should alternative procedures be considered? What lessons can be learned from other regions, including the United States? Senior-level government and health experts will discuss these issues and more.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Aaron M. Milstone, Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology, The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions
  • Marcos A. Espinal, Director, Department of Communicable Diseases and Health Analysis, Pan American Health Organization
  • Román Macaya Hayes, Ambassador of Costa Rica to the United States
  • Neil Parsan, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago to the United States
  • Captain Michael Schmoyer, Director of the Office of Pandemic and Emerging Threats, Office of Global Affairs, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services
