This event celebrates 50 years of Epsilon Kappa, St. John’s chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society. Epsilon Kappa has promoted Hispanic culture on and off campus through interviews with foremost literary figures, open forums for readings and literary discussions, as well as through the publication of Entre Rascacielos, its bilingual journal of creative writing. The historic event will feature opening remarks by Dr. Marie-Lise Gazarian, director of the graduate program in Spanish at St. John´s University, and vice president of Sigma Delta Pi for the Northeast, the National Hispanic Honor Society. 

It will also include comments and readings by the following Epsilon Kappa members and invited guests: Gerardo Piña Rosales, president, North American Academy of the Spanish Language and Honorary President of Sigma Delta Pi; Joseph Sciame, vice president of community relations, St. John´s University; Nicolas Toscano, member, North American Academy of the Spanish Language and professor of literature, St. John's University; Myriam de Arteni, senior exhibitions conservator, New York Public Library; Elizabeth Ilia Kostas, United States certified interpreter; Alex Lima, poet and professor; Katerina Damskiy, book-cover designer of Entre Rascacielos; Mónica Sarmiento Castillo, director of bi/Coa.

This celebration has been made possible through the collaboration of Americas Society with Sigma Delta Pi, the Graduate Program in Spanish of St. John’s University, and Bicentennial Iberoamerican/Council of Americas (bi/Coa). Marie-Lise Gazarian is professor of Spanish and Latin American literature, director of the graduate program in Spanish at St. John's University, vice president for the Northeast of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, and moderator of Epsilon Kappa, St. John's Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi. In 2001 she was awarded the Orden de Don Quijote by Sigma Delta Pi. In 2003, she was awarded the Orden de Alfonso X el Sabio by the King of Spain, one of the highest recognitions granted by the Spanish government. In 2004, she received from the government of Chile the Orden al Merito “Gabriela Mistral,” named after the Chilean poet, a decoration granted to literary figures, scholars and artists. She is co-editor with Mónica Christopher-Sánchez of Entre Rascacielos.
