Overview

Council of the Americas will hold a discussion keynoted by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner R. Gil Kerlikowske. As the primary agency charged with ensuring the efficient flow of trade through U.S. ports of entry, CBP seeks to balance commercial interests in reducing transaction costs with the often competing goal of enforcing laws designed to protect against illegal imports. Kerlikowske will address CBP’s approach to this challenge in the context of the Western Hemisphere, its efforts to partner with industry and regional governments, and the implementation of a Single Window for imports and exports. These policies have important implications for virtually every sector of the U.S. economy. Following Kerlikowske’s remarks, an expert panel will provide additional perspectives on trade facilitation in the Western Hemisphere and in North America.

Speakers:

  • R. Gil Kerlikowske, Commissioner, U.S. Customs and Border Protection
  • Antoni Estevadeordal, Manager, Trade and Integration Sector, Inter-American Development Bank
  • Alex Hinojosa, Deputy Manager Director, North American Development Bank
  • Amgad Shehata, Vice President, International Public Affairs, UPS
  • Brenda Smith, Assistant Commissioner of International Trade, Customs and Border Protection
