To close AS/COA's 2013 Lima conference, Peru's Vice President Marisol Espinoza recognized the numerous water-management challenges that the country faces.

Espinoza said that although Peru has one of the most important sources of natural resources in Latin America and the world, the government is committed to preserving ecosystems. "Water is a fundamental aspect of inclusion, of dignity, and of human rights," said Espinoza.

She talked about the need to develop new technologies in water management and how innovation must answer not only to demand, but also to "a demand for water of adequate quality." The vice president noted that "the challenge is to guarantee potable water and sanitation for all Peruvians."

Espinoza spoke about including innovation as a component of Peru's growth, betting on education and the country's youth as a new path for finding solutions. "We want go from being an extractive economy to a value-added economy," she said.
