Press Conference: Mexican Candidate Josefina Vázquez Mota's Foreign Policy Platform

Less than three months ahead of Mexico’s presidential election, AS/COA hosts an April 20 press conference with Ambassador Rubén Beltrán, international affairs coordinator for Mexican presidential candidate Josefina Vázquez Mota, to discuss her foreign policy agenda.

NEW YORK, April 16, 2012 – Less than three months ahead of Mexico’s presidential election, AS/COA hosts a press conference with Ambassador Rubén Beltrán, international affairs coordinator for Mexican presidential candidate Josefina Vázquez Mota, to discuss her foreign policy agenda. Josefina Vázquez Mota, the National Action Party (PAN) candidate, is the first woman to be nominated by any of Mexico’s three major political parties. Prior to becoming the PAN’s presidential candidate, Vázquez Mota served as secretary of Public Education for President Felipe Calderón, secretary of Social Development for ex-President Vicente Fox, and in a number of leadership roles for the PAN bloc in the Mexican Congress.

We are pleased to invite you to a press conference with Ambassador Rubén Beltrán, Vázquez Mota’s international affairs coordinator on Friday, April 20. Before joining the campaign, the ambassador served as undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean at Mexico’s Secretariat of Foreign Relations. He has also served in various high-level positions for the federal government, as well as consul general of Mexico in New York, Los Angeles, and Phoenix.

Given his international diplomatic experience, the ambassador is well positioned to respond to questions regarding Josefina Vázquez Mota’s foreign policy platform. Vázquez Mota has urged a global perspective to deal with the threat of transnational crime. She proposes building on North American integration through advances in temporary worker programs, border technology, and increased trade. She recommends giving an international focus to the issue of migration, proposing creation of an Undersecretariat of Mexicans Abroad to serve Mexicans living in other countries as well as their home communities.
