Pedro Pablo Kuczynski to Claim Victory in Peru’s Presidential Election

LIMA, Peru—Economist Pedro Pablo Kuczynski on Thursday said he would seek unity and dialogue in an eventual government as he was on the verge of officially clinching one of the tightest elections in Peruvian history.

Mr. Kuczynski accepted the results with “a lot of modesty,” he said in brief comments at his campaign headquarters, where earlier in the day a banner read “Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, President of Peru.”…

…“It was really a stunning comeback,” said Cynthia McClintock, a political scientist at George Washington University.

Mr. Kuczynski’s last-minute rally has been attributed to political endorsements, a solid debate performance and scandals in Ms. Fujimori’s party that reminded voters of the dark side of her father’s authoritarian regime in the 1990s. Mr. Fujimori is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for human-rights crimes and corruption.
