Mexico's Anti-Corruption Bill Stalls Amid Silence From President

After the energy and telecommunications reforms, transparency and accountability are two of the most pressing issues for Mexico, points out AS/COA’s Eric Farnsworth.

One year ago Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, reeling from conflict of interest allegations over his family’s purchase of luxury homes, signed an anti-graft law before a packed audience at Mexico’s national palace and swore a "firm commitment" to fight corruption. A year later and the secondary bills to implement the measure are languishing in congress….

… After overhauls to open the energy industry to more private investment and boost competition in phone services, transparency and accountability for politicians are two of the most pressing issues for the nation, said Eric Farnsworth, vice president of the Council of the Americas in Washington.

“Many people were hoping that action on corruption would be part of the overall reform agenda,” Farnsworth said. “To make the other reforms lasting, there needs to be trust in the system.”
