Mexico Election Preview/Root Causes of Migrant Crisis

By Carol Castiel

"The Mexican people are very much in the mood for a change," said AS/COA's Eric Farnsworth on why Andrés Manuel López Obrador had such a strong lead in the polls.

In a conversation with Carol Castiel for Voice of America's Encounter program, AS/COA Vice President Eric Farnsworth and Associate Director of the Latin American Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Eric Olson spoke about the presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador and why he had such a commanding lead in the polls.

When asked how López Obrador would manage the important yet frayed U.S. – Mexico relationship, Eric Farnsworth said that “bilateral relations really do run on the relationship between leaders.” However, one would be quick to assume that the relationship would go straight for the rocks, noted Eric. There are some big issues that the two countries can cooperate on that are beneficial to each country such as reducing the factors that lead to Central American migration.
