COA Statement on the Release of U.S. Objectives for the NAFTA Renegotiation

COA reaffirms its support for updating and modernizing the almost 24-year-old agreement to meet the demands of the twenty-first century.

Washington, July 17, 2017 — Council of the Americas (COA) looks forward to the forthcoming negotiations between the United States, Mexico, and Canada regarding the modernization of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Following the release of the administration’s negotiating objectives by the Office of U.S. Trade Representative, COA reaffirms its support for updating and modernizing the almost 24-year-old agreement to meet the demands of the twenty-first century. In so doing, COA renews its commitment to expanding North America’s commercial integration, which over the past two decades has contributed to regional job creation, competitiveness, and overall economic growth. Find the negotiating objectives in the USTR's website.

NAFTA has directly supported U.S. economic, national security, and foreign policy interests. A successful renegotiation of NAFTA that deepens commercial and investment ties will further advance those interests for the benefit of the United States and the American people.

Since 1965, COA has promoted democracy, open markets, and economic and social development based on the rule of law, and we are widely recognized for our policy and commercial leadership throughout the Americas. The Council counts over 200 companies invested in and doing business across the Western Hemisphere among its members, representing a significant amount of trade and cross-border investment.
