Americas Society is proud to announce that we have received a grant from The Christopher Reynolds Foundation to support two important projects: Americas Society’s Cuba Working Group, and our Spring 2011 Visual Arts exhibition, For Rent: Consuelo Castañeda.

The Cuba Working Group was formed in 2008 to promote greater political and economic opening between the U.S. and Cuba. Meetings bring together private-sector leaders, representatives from the U.S. government and Cuba experts to discuss policy options. The partnership with The Christopher Reynolds Foundation will allow Americas Society to expand our Cuba Working Group activities and focus greater attention on recent U.S. regulatory changes that have created new opportunities for sector-specific discussions in areas such as support for microenterprise, access to basic financial services, insurance, and telecommunications.

In For Rent, Miami-based artist Consuelo Castañeda reconfigures Americas Society’s exhibition space using film projections, archival materials, and revisiting the gallery’s history to transform the site into a participatory “lounge.” Public and private histories collide at the intersection of the artist’s personal history as a Cuban artist and emigrée. The exhibition will be accompanied by public programs conceived as interventions: a screening of the award-winning 2008 film installation Guantanamera, followed by a discussion with filmmakers Ross Birrell and David Harding, curators Yasmeen Siddiqui and Gabriela Rangel, and playwright Carmen Pelaéz; and a reading by acclaimed Cuban writer Jose Manuel Prieto. For Rent: Consuelo Castañeda is part of ¡Sí Cuba! Festival—a New York celebration of Cuban arts and culture (www.sicuba.org).
