Brazilian Police Question Ex-President Lula da Silva in Petrobras Probe

The detention of former President Lula da Silva “signals a completely new moment for the Petrobras probe and for the Workers’ Party and for Brazil generally” says AS/COA’s Brian Winter.

SÃO PAULO—Brazil’s federal police on Friday detained former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for questioning in connection with a burgeoning corruption scandal, deepening a political crisis that threatens to engulf the nation’s government and further polarize an angry public….

… “It is obviously a historic moment for Brazilian politics,” said Brian Winter, vice-president of Americas Society/Council of The Americas. “It signals a completely new moment for the Petrobras probe and for the Workers’ Party and for Brazil generally.”

Friday’s developments began when police searched the offices of Mr. da Silva’s nonprofit Instituto Lula foundation and his apartment in São Bernardo do Campo, both in metropolitan São Paulo. Authorities seized documents and other information, police said….
