On September 26, the Americas Society will present President Juan Manuel Santos with the Gold Insigne, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments as President of Colombia.

New York, September 21, 2012 - On Wednesday, September 26, Americas Society will present President Juan Manuel Santos with the Gold Insigne, the organization’s highest honor, in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments as President of Colombia.
Americas Society’s Gold Insigne is awarded to democratically elected heads of state from the Western Hemisphere who work to promote greater awareness of the cultural, social and political realities of the region, and greater understanding among the nations of the Americas.
“President Santos is a regional leader, admired for his vision and his determination to continue moving Colombia forward on a path to peace and prosperity,” says Americas Society President and CEO Susan Segal. “We are truly honored to present him with the Gold Insigne.”
Colombia has demonstrated robust economic performance in the two years since President Santos took office. The economy is expected to grow between 4 and 5 percent in 2012 and foreign direct investment for the first eight months of the year reached a record $11.8 billion. In August, President Santos announced that his administration has launched internationally sponsored peace talks with rebel insurgents in a new attempt to put an end to Colombia’s four-decade-conflict.
“President Santos’ leadership has helped usher Colombia into a new era as an emerging regional power, allowing Colombians to reap the benefits of an internationally engaged country,” says Americas Society Chairman Ambassador John D. Negroponte.
Past honorees of the Gold Insigne include Álvaro Uribe, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, Michelle Bachelet, Alan García, and Felipe Calderón.
