Network to be launched at a full-day workshop in New York

New York, October 10, 2012- Americas Society and Council of the Americas will launch a hemispheric women’s network at a full-day workshop on women’s economic empowerment and leadership this week in New York. Drawing on its convening power, AS/COA has attracted businesswomen, professionals, entrepreneurs, and other private and public sector leaders from Latin America, the United States and Canada, to actively engage in this interactive workshop. The event is the first part in an ongoing dialogue set on building a hemispheric network that promotes the economic empowerment of women in business and other professions that will in turn increase women’s political participation and decision-making across the region.

“Role models, networks, and mentors are crucial to women’s professional success. Every day we see an increasing number of women entrepreneurs, but it is critical that women can rise to become CEOs and board members in private and public companies in the hemisphere and throughout the world,” says AS/COA President and CEO Susan Segal.

Keynote speakers and participants at the event include Michelle Bachelet, former president of Chile and UN Women executive director; Mexican First Lady Margarita Zavala de Calderón; former Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs and former President and CEO of Discovery Communications Judith McHale; Americas Society and Council of the Americas President and CEO Susan Segal; President and CEO of Grupo Diarq Gina Diez Barroso; and Susana Balbo, founder of Dominio del Plata.

“We will be organized around a series of panels that will feature leaders, role models and mentors. This won’t be a conference but an interactive session, a bold and necessary step where participants will be asked to build the hemispheric network that enables women’s economic empowerment,” added Segal.

To continue building the hemispheric women’s network, AS/COA’s full-day event on women’s economic empowerment and leadership will be followed by annual workshops in New York and select roundtables in Latin America.
