Audio: Brazil's Minister of Mines and Energy Edison Lobão

November 13, 2008

In an AS/COA luncheon, Brazil’s Minister of Energy and Mines Edison Lobão discussed both opportunities and challenges for Brazil’s energy sector. He noted achievements in energy investment programs for hydroelectric energy and thermal, electric, wind power, sugarcane-ethanol, biodiesel, and nuclear power plants.

He also discussed difficulties facing Brazil’s energy sector, which include the expansion of power supply and transportation of energy and raising the energy efficiency level. He acknowledged, however, that Brazil has the necessary tools to manage the energy sector and increase its efficiency on a global scale. Lobão stressed Brazil’s strong capacity to become energy independent and emphasized Brazil’s openness to foreign investment in the energy sector.
