Today's Ruling on Arizona Law SB 1070 a Vital Development
July 28, 2010New York---Today’s ruling by Federal Judge Susan Bolton to block discriminatory provisions of Arizona immigration law SB 1070 is a positive development for the people of Arizona and for the nation.
Judge Bolton issued a preliminary injunction against sections of the law that would require officers to check a person’s immigration status while enforcing other laws and immigrants to carry their papers at all times.
“Today’s ruling on Arizona’s SB 1070 is a crucial step toward preserving the rights of U.S. residents and preventing broad-based profiling,” says Americas Society and Council of the Americas President and CEO Susan Segal. “The Hispanic workforce that is so vital to the health of our nation’s economy cannot live in fear of wrongful harassment or detention.”
Read both sides of the debate in the Summer issue of Americas Quarterly, where Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson face off on state rights to enforce immigration policy.
Americas Society and Council of the Americas recognize the invaluable contributions made by Hispanic immigrants and actively promote their greater integration through the Hispanic Integration Hub, an online destination that presents and promotes effective private-sector integration efforts.
