Empowering the Cuban People through Technology

July 15, 2010

Empowering the Cuban People through Technology: Recommendations for Private and Public Sector Leaders, written in collaboration with the Brookings Institution and the Cuba Study Group, explores how U.S. policymakers can craft legislative and regulatory changes that help Cubans gain access to IT and social media tools. The paper also looks at ways that social media companies can increase access and usability from within Cuba and steps that can be taken by both the private and public sectors to help Cuba close its technology gap in the future.

Drawing from the Americas Society and Council of the America’s work on U.S. government policies toward Cuba, this white paper outlines comprehensive recommendations aimed at facilitating greater access to technology and telecommunications services in Cuba. Over 50 information technology and telecommunications executives and other experts contributed to the drafting of these recommendations as part of the Cuba IT and Social Media Initiative convened by the Cuba Study Group in January 2010.
